Project Description:

In 2006 Toronto Hydro Telecom successfully launched one of North America’s most robust outdoor wireless zones, covering the city’s downtown core. Following this accomplishment, Deep Tech member Amelia Bryne worked with University of Toronto professor Andrew Clement, as part of the Community Wireless Infrastructure Research Project, to investigate whether Toronto Hydro Telecom, a private company owned by the city, was in a position to further improve internet service in the city of Toronto.  Our study revealed how provincial regulation of the energy industry in the 1990s had indirectly affected the telecommunications industry, causing cities that owned telecom assets to face conflicts of interest between public and private sector goals.
