Context
People see information and communication technologies as a fix for society’s problems. But they can also create problems of their own. If we want to use information and communications technologies (ICTs) to make the world a better place, we need to know what kind of impact they have on communities and the environment.
Approach
We research the relationship between ICT, people and the planet. We use a variety of methods to answer questions of ICT impact for governments, non-profits, foundations and businesses. We communicate complex concepts concerning ICT’s impact to non-experts. We work on multi-disciplinary long-term projects and short standalone projects. We’re flexible team players and experienced project managers.
Clients
Deep Tech members have worked with research groups, foundations, consultancies, government agencies, and companies, including The Ethos Group, Federal Communications Commission, Social Science Research Council, Community Wireless Infrastructure Research Project, Prometheus Radio, Media Justice Fund, Centre for Studies in Food Security, ByDesign eLab, eCommons, and the Ford Foundation.
Services
We help clients and collaborators answer questions like: What are the most pressing communications issues for the people we serve? How do people without easy access to information and communications technologies meet their communication needs, and what can be done to support them? What is the best evaluation strategy for our project? What is the relationship between ICTs and the environment, and how does that relate to my organization? What were the impacts of a particular policy decision, and how could unintended impacts be mitigated?
